When your writing surprises you

I like to think that the uncertainty principle allows for surprises. Imaginative writing often veers off in unexpected directions, to the astonishment of the writer. Freshness and new insights happen in a continuous stream as we learn from our stories, our poems, our imaginations. How many of us–novelists, poets, essayists– are taught by the words and images that come to us (like unanticipated gifts, without our even trying) … ?
